I. Define and purpose
Fiber glass is a kind ofinorganic non-ferrous material with remarkable properties. Its gravity is 1.8g/cm3, and its weight is aquarter of steel and two thirds of aluminum. However, its hardness is ten timesof that of hard PVC ( polyvinyl chloride). Therefore, its rigidity is muchgreater than aluminum, and reaches 1.7 times of that of normal steel.
Fiberglass rod is formed by pultrusion which is a continuous process for manufactureof glass fiber reinforced plastic with constant cross-section. With the aid offorming machine, the reinforcement materials such as fiber glass roving andcontinuous mat are impregnated with base materials like unsaturated polyesterresin, and pulled through a heated die where solidification happens. Then thefinal formation is done by consistent pulling force.
Therefore,this kind of thermosetting polymer is characterized by smooth surface,dimensional stability and prominent rigidity.
